Understanding the Biblical Sabbath: Sunset to Sunset
An introductory study of the seventh-day Sabbath, biblical timekeeping and practical preparation for families.
The seventh day
The Sabbath is introduced in the creation account when the Most High rested, blessed the seventh day and set it apart. The command later given to Israel says to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. It is a day distinguished from the ordinary work of the other six days.
Why sunset matters
Biblical days are repeatedly described from evening to morning. Leviticus 23:32 explicitly describes observance “from even unto even.” For that reason, many families who keep the biblical Sabbath begin at sunset on the sixth day and continue until sunset on the seventh day.
Preparation protects the day
A peaceful Sabbath is easier when ordinary work is handled beforehand. Families can prepare food, finish purchases, organize clothing and discuss the day’s plan before sunset. Preparation is not about making the day burdensome; it creates room for rest, worship, study and time together.
Rest, assembly and doing good
The Sabbath is associated with rest and holy gathering. Scripture also shows that doing good and meeting genuine needs are consistent with the day. The purpose is not careless inactivity, but a set-apart rhythm that turns attention away from ordinary labor and toward the Most High.
